For best performance from the Hercules System, we have a couple of structure requirements. This makes sure your system won’t leak and will perform to its full potential in high winds and heavy snow loads.
The Hercules System works best on pergolas with purlins. Since the panels can’t be trimmed, rafters need to be spaced at an exact 23 ¾”. Depending on your pergola’s slope and your design preferences, there are multiple ways to modify the structure for a successful installation.
Rafters are the main structural beams that run across the pergola, usually larger and spaced farther apart. They give the pergola its strength and framework.
Shade slats (also called purlins) are the smaller boards that sit on top of or across the rafters. They don’t add much structure, but they create extra shade and a more finished look overhead.

The Hercules System is rated for snow loads up to 50 PSF when purlins are spaced 23″ or less. For comparison, most home roofs are rated between 20–30 PSF.
The Hercules System is rated to withstand wind speeds up to 139 mph when installed correctly. For best performance, make sure your purlins are spaced less than 19″ apart and the cover is secured to the structure with screws (not nails).
