Rafters are the bigger boards that form the main structure of your pergola. They’re spaced farther apart and give your pergola its strength and shape.
Shade slats — also called purlins — are the smaller boards that run across the top of those rafters. They don’t add much structure, but they do add extra shade and give your pergola a clean, finished look overhead.
The Apollo System can be installed over either rafters or purlins since the panels can be trimmed to fit your setup. For best performance, keep the spacing between both rafters and purlins 24″ or less.
The Apollo System is built to handle snow loads up to 36 psf when installed with proper support and cross-bracing. For best performance, keep rafter spacing at 24” or less and cross-bracing at 16” or less.
It’s a great fit for areas with light to moderate snowfall—think a few snowstorms a year. If you’re in a region with heavy snow, like the mountains or Northeast, the Hercules System is your best bet. It offers extra strength and durability for harsher winter conditions.
The Apollo System is designed to handle wind speeds up to 116 mph when installed with proper support and cross bracing. For best performance, keep rafter spacing at 24” or less and cross bracing at 16” or less.
If you live in a coastal or hurricane-prone area, we recommend upgrading to our Hercules System. It’s NOA certified and engineered to withstand even higher wind speeds for maximum protection and peace of mind.

Cleaning is easy! a hose will get mostly everything off. In the case of tree sap, regular diluted dish soap and water do the trick.
